Marine
Both brushed and brushless motors have applications in the marine industry including for use in thruster drives, steering systems, winch systems, rotary feed systems for fish farms, industrial scale fishing reels, and wheel drive systems for amphibious boat-cars.
Applications are typically low voltage, and the following two examples illustrate where Printed Motor Works has designed specialist solutions that use the voltage supply of the vessel and minimise space and weight.
Application: an autosteering motor
PMW’s GPM16LRD brushed motor is a high power double motor that provides 550W power but is only 50mm long.
It was developed for applications such as autosteering systems.
The motor has two armatures mounted together on a single shaft and is a special adaptation of the company’s standard GPM16LR
Application: a sealed thruster motor
The brushless DC XR20-12 was developed by PMW for an underwater thruster to provide propulsion as an alternative to outboard motors.
The hub motor was specially designed to withstand water ingress and has a pressure relief system to allow for the thermal expansion of the pressure-compensating internal oil. The unit is designed to have a propeller attached to the motor hub to directly drive the craft.
The gearless system is fully submersible to a depth of 10m.
